confidence-rulesPlayer confidence is a major factor on the field. Nothing destroys a rugby players ability quicker then a handling error in a tense situation. With the grunt of disapproval from thousands of fans and the look of disbelief on your team mates faces, it takes a true champion to rise up and deliver!

Introducing the Confidence Rules for Crash Tackle. Now how your players perform under pressure on the field ultimately effects their future performance in the game.



A player who fails a Gather, Pass or Kick dice roll will loose confidence in their ability to deliver the next time around.

If a player fails one of these rolls then place a Confidence Marker (click here to download the printable PDF) on the player who failed the roll.

What does the Confidence Marker do?

Basically this marker reduces the players Ball Skill by -1 and thereby making them less likely to perform their next Gather, Pass or Kick.

Not again?

If the same player fails another Pass, Gather or Kick roll then another Confidence Marker is added, effectively reducing his Ball Skill by -2... and so on and so forth. A players Ball Skill may not be reduced to less then 2, meaning a roll of double 1 will always restore confidence.

Restoring Confidence

The Confidence Marker will remain in effect until...

  • The player concerned makes a successful Gather, Pass or Kick roll
  • The player uses a Pressure Play card that allows and automatic (no dice roll needed) Pass, Gather or Kick... i.e. Smooth Pass, Flip Pass, Safe Hands or Pressure Kick
  • The coach can choose to make a substitution (see Training Guide)


If any of the above are achieved then the players confidence bounces back to normal and the Confidence Marker(s) and their effects are removed.

Scrums and Line-outs

A failed Scrum or Line-out is also effected by the Confidence rules, however they effect the Hooker (no.2) in the case of a failed Line-out and either the Scrumhalf (no.9) or Eighth-man (no.8), depending on who you choose to receive from the Scrum.

The Coach Factor

The half time whistle often brings a welcome relief to tired bodies, but even more so to a players battered confidence. Although the shelter of the change room and calming words of the coach help to ease the pain of failure they can not completely restore it.

At half time you can remove 1 Confidence Marker from each player in your team if required.
